In colder seasons, heading out at the right time of day can make a big difference. Early mornings often start with a layer of ice, especially on Northern lakes. Waiting until later in the afternoon gives the sun time to warm up the shallows, which encourages fish activity.

This slight temperature change, even in cold water, draws fish into the shallows. They often seek out places with darker bottoms like areas with old vegetation or pad roots—which hold heat better and become ideal spots for fish to move into.

There are two standout times of year for cold-water fishing:

  • Late Fall – When most people are shifting to hunting season, the lakes become less crowded.

  • Early Spring – Just after the ice begins to thaw and before the water fully warms up.

These windows are brief, but when timed right, they can be incredibly rewarding. Fish are more concentrated and respond better to the subtle warmth of sunlit areas.

Even though southern waters may be more consistent year-round, there’s something special about those first days when Northern lakes open up. The change in seasons stirs both nature and the angler, it’s a unique time that many  look forward to every year.
