The Power of the Popper in Post-Spawn Fishing

Catching Them with Top Water

Everybody loves to catch fish with top water, and during the post-spawn time of the year, you just can’t beat it. A popper is especially good for this time of year. Look how this one ate it! A popper is just so good for it. I mean, I’ve got isolated docks, grass, and seawalls to work with.

I just want to keep this popper in the strike zone as much as possible. That’s a good solid one right there, but we’ll let him go.

Setting Up for the Perfect Popper Cast

Having the right setup for throwing a popper is crucial. This is one of those things where you just have to use a monofilament line. Monofilament floats a little bit, which is what you want for this type of fishing. I’m using a 7-foot medium-heavy action rod with a medium-action tip. You want a rod with a nice soft tip and a shorter handle for better control.

Choosing the Right Gear

I’m using a high-speed reel with a 17-pound mono line. I like to use bigger lines because it helps keep the bait floating on top. The bait I’m using is a Strike King KVD Splash, which has a good rattle to it. It’s just the perfect bait for this setup.

Mastering Accuracy with the Popper

With this softer rod and shorter handle, I can make short little underhand casts, and accuracy is key. Just like that, the cast was right on the shade line of the dock, which is exactly where you want to place your top water bait. There are a lot of options for top water lures, but when you have specific targets like this, there’s nothing like the power of the popper.
