When bass are on bait like that, there’s just nothing better than throwing a jerkbait. You’ll see it a lot in the South during a winter shad kill that’s when a jerkbait can be deadly effective. Even up north, it’s the same deal. They focus hard on whatever bait is around at the time.
What Bass Are Eating
Smallmouth especially love crawfish, gobies, shiners, and perch. They’ll go after whatever’s most available.
In northern lakes with rivers running through them, you get a lot of suckers and shiners too. The main thing is, whatever’s easiest to catch, that’s what they’re feeding on.
Why a Jerkbait Works So Well?
A jerkbait mimics dying bait perfectly. That natural looking action, combined with the right color, triggers strikes when bass are feeding heavy like they do in the spring.
If you match your bait to what they’re already eating like that shad the fish coughed up earlier, you’re setting yourself up for some serious bites.
