It’s all about finding a bait that has a great dive angle to it, and finding the grass line/edge. Make your cast parallell and start cranking it down and with power. A heavier line is usually needed, starting, stopping and listen to KVD’s method here.
Strike King Pro Model 8XD and 10XD Deep Diving Crankbaits
When many anglers encounter lakes filled with grass, they avoid crankbaits, fearing the lure will constantly get fouled up. But for me, cranking grass edges is an exciting and efficient way to find bass.
It’s one of the best techniques for covering vast stretches of grass edges quickly and effectively.
The key to success in a grass-filled lake is finding where the bass are holding. This is where having the right crankbait comes into play. You’ll need a bait with a good diving angle that can reach the depth of the outside grass edge.
My go-to choices are the Strike King 3XD, Series 5, and 5XD crankbaits. These lures are perfect for covering depths ranging from 8 to 12 feet and even down to the 12-to-15-foot zone.
Positioning and Technique
To start, I position my boat just outside the grass line. Using electronics, I follow the edges with precision, making parallel or quartering casts along the grass line. The goal is to crank the bait down and let it dive into the grass.
As the lure hits the grass, it’s crucial to free it effectively. That’s where my crankbait system comes in handy. I prefer using heavier lines when cranking in grassy areas than I normally would with crankbaits.
Bass Pro XPS fluorocarbon in 14, 17, or even 20-pound test works perfectly, providing the strength needed to rip the lure free.
The Art of Retrieval
Once the bait is down in the grass, pay close attention to how it feels if it starts to load up slightly, pause. A bending or tugging motion often signals a fish on the line—exactly what you’re hoping for! If not, drop the rod tip to create slack, then give the bait a sharp snap to free it from the grass. Afterward, continue retrieving the lure.
Why Cranking Grass Edges Works
Crankbaits are unparalleled in their ability to cover water efficiently. By focusing on the grass edges, you can locate prime areas where bass are feeding. With the right lure, line, and technique, this method turns challenging grass-filled waters into productive fishing spots.
So next time you’re on a grassy lake, don’t shy away from crankbaits. Embrace the challenge, crank those edges, and discover just how effective this technique can be.
