When targeting bass in cold water, it’s all about identifying areas that retain warmth and provide cover. I always look for places with dead vegetation, pad stems, dark bottoms, and even rocks anything that absorbs and radiates heat.

Depth changes, depressions, and small ditches can also be key locations. Even in Northern natural lakes, these features hold bass.

In Texas, I focused on finding little drains and ditches leading into spawning flats, and the same strategy applies here in Michigan.

The key is locating slightly deeper areas surrounded by warmer water. When you find a small ditch or depression with these conditions, that’s where the bass will be concentrated.

Key Fishing Spots and Techniques

Right now is a great time to get out on the water and get a lot of bites. The way the bass are feeding is interesting. One of my go-to lures in these conditions is the 3.25 Rage Swimmer in KVD Magic, a natural-colored bait that matches the forage.

When I scanned the area with Mega Side Imaging, I could see bluegill covering the bottom. As soon as I dropped the trolling motor with 360 Imaging and Mega Live, it confirmed what I suspected bass were stacked in the middle of a small depression, feeding heavily on bluegill.

There’s something about the slow tail wag of the Rage Swimmer that makes it irresistible to these fish. The bass are healthy, and when you find them, they’re locked into very specific areas.

Understanding Bass Positioning

Once I started casting around with the Rage Swimmer, I really dialed in where the bass were holding. Even though the bluegill were spread out in a large hole, the bass were concentrated in just one corner of it.

Interestingly, that spot was positioned where the wind was pushing into it, creating a small current. This makes perfect sense, bass use anything that forms a natural funnel or an edge leading onto a flat as ambush points.

These areas naturally stack up fish, making them prime targets for a successful day on the water.
