Shallow Water Fishing for Big Smallmouth Bass

One thing I found when I find the big smallmouth in the fall is when they decide to go super shallow. A lot of times, a spinnerbait’s too loud for them. You’ve got to catch them with something like a swimbait.

The Perfect Lure: Bluegill Pattern Thunder Cricut

One of my favorites is a bluegill pattern Thunder Cricut, like this one. I’ve got a perch color with a Rage Menace on there. Look at that—they’re fat and super shallow. There’s crayfish up there, a lot of skipjack minnows, and things like that.

Finding the Right Spot

Just the cast before, I had seen a bunch of these little minnows skipping. I fired my lure by a little sand spot and fished any little transition. These big smallmouths will hunt those shallow edges.

Effective Lure for Shallow Water Fishing

Using something like this, which allows you to cover a lot of water, is really effective in catching them.
