5 Must-Have Fall Fishing Baits

If you’re thinking about baits that you have to have tied on in the fall, I’ve got five of them right here that I just won’t leave home without.

1. KVD 1.5 Square Bill

First and foremost, a KVD 1.5 Square bill is my go-to shallow crankbait. We make different colors to match the forage, whether you’re looking at perch, bluegill, Shad, or whatever happens to be in the system.

It’s just a great bait whether you’re fishing shallow cover in the back of a creek or cranking grass out on a main lake flat. It’s a go-to bait for me for that 4, 6, 7-foot zone anywhere I go in the country. It’s just a great fish catcher.

2. Thunder Cricket (Vibrating Jig)

Another bait that is a great fish catcher is a Thunder Cricket, also known as a vibrating jig. I usually put a blade minnow on it, and it’s a tremendous Big Bass catcher. I use it in clear water; it’s a great smallmouth bait. It’s another tool that is very different than a square bill, giving off a lot of vibration.

Bass are really drawn to it. In the fall, it’s all about bait, whether they’re feeding on Bluegill, Shad, perch, shiners, or alewives. These are all baits that I can use to match the type of forage.

3. Jerk Bait

Another essential bait is jerk bait. I’ll use it around schooling fish, but I also fish it around any edge. It’s a high-percentage bait that can get a ton of reaction strikes. If I’ve got clear water, you can bet that I’m going to be throwing a jerk bait in the fall.

4. Spinner Bait

What better lure is there to imitate baitfish than a spinner bait? It’s super versatile because you can fish it super shallow, burn it right underneath the surface in clear water, slow roll it around laydowns and logs, fish it around boat docks, or throw it around bushes.

It’s a top-to-bottom bait that you can control the depth zone of. Pick a color that matches the forage in the system that you’re fishing. Usually, in the fall, I go with a double Willow blade to imitate baitfish, but it really depends on the water clarity.

If you get a big rain, like we’ve had with recent hurricanes, and the backs of the creeks get dirty, a Colorado blade spinner bait can be really good. A spinner bait is something you should never leave home without in the fall of the year.

5. Swimbait (Rage Swimmer)

Last but not least, you’ve got to have a swimbait, specifically several sizes of Rage Swimmers. A swimbait is just a great baitfish imitator. Depending on what size head you put on it, you can fish it from top to bottom, and it’s going to catch fish.

It will imitate the bait anywhere I go. I can match the color—whether it’s Shad, bluegill, or perch—and the size. Whether it’s a 2.75 or all the way up to a really big one, I can use the right size swimbait to match the forage in the system.

These five baits are ones that you should not leave home without in the fall of the year.
